Native Seed Collection
Teacher: Lasse Dümke from Vildnis
The workshop will focus on restoring an ancient ecological function of the grassland ecosystem where is has been los: the dispersal of plant seeds over large distances carried out by large herbivores.
During the workshop, we will take a walk to the captivating Trehøje in Nationalpark Molsbjerge, a species-rich acidic grassland. As we explore, we will collect seeds and engage in discussions about the various species we encounter. Moreover, we will emphasize the significance of restoring this lost ecological function of seed dispersal throughout the landscape.

Plants play crucial roles in ecosystems as primary producers, converting sunlight into energy and forming the base of the food web. They provide habitat and shelter for various species, contribute to nutrient cycling, and regulate water and climate through processes like transpiration and carbon sequestration.
Plants also stabilize soil, support biodiversity, and form symbiotic relationships with other organisms. Additionally, they offer numerous benefits to humans, including food, medicine, and cultural value. Understanding these roles emphasizes the importance of plant conservation for maintaining healthy, resilient ecosystems.
-
Taxonomy: Understanding plant classification helps in identifying the correct species for seed collection.
Morphology: Knowledge of plant structures, such as flowers, leaves, and seeds, aids in accurate identification and collection. -
The project will cover different topics such as:
Baisc Plant Identification
Plant Life Cycles
Plant-Environment Interaction
Importance of Genetic Diversity
-
The goal is to restore degraded habitats with species adapted to local conditions that will help create higher biodiversity on the fields.
The goal is also to help spread species from Nationalpark Molsbjerg to others parts and form a seedbank at Rødegaard, so the species can spread.
-
Hands-On Learning:
Learn to recognise different species. After collecting the species from captivating Trehøje we will return to the new grasslands at Rødegaard and carefully scatter the collected seeds in a prepared sowing bed.Community Building: Connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for sustainability and nature. Work together, share ideas, and build lasting relationships.
Fun and Rewarding Experience: Participate in a meaningful project that benefits both people and the planet.

Yes absolutly, you can take the same principels and applied it on wanted area.
At the end of the festival you will be provided by materials from which you can learn more and start your own seed collection.
About Lasse
Lasse is a biologist educated from Aarhus University with focus on botany, rewilding and ecology. During the studies he worked at the Botanical Garden as a guide for five years and spent time doing voluntary work in organisations concerned with urban biodiversity and green spaces.
Since his graduation, Lasse has worked with monitoring protected nature in Denmark and doing workshops on Danish Biodiversity. He is also the co-founder of Vildnis.

Habitat Creation
Learn how to support and create different habitats for small insects and mammals by imitating natural processes in a manipulated system. We will focus on building dead hedges, inviting species such as hedgehogs, wrens, and solitary bees to move in.
-
Hydrology
The purpose of the project will be to expand on the ecological space from the forest to the fields, by simulating forest clearings, providing food sources for pollinators, as well as to protect the field in case of harsh climate changes.
-
Forest Garden
Learn hands-on how to construct a forest garden based on Permaculture principles. The goal is to make resilient, low-maintenance systems that will be an example of “Use and value diversity” which you can implement in your own home.
